This image was shot in 1989, when I was a junior staff photographer at the Northampton Chronicle and Echo. Margaret Thatcher was on an official visit to the overseas removal firm, Michael Gerson (the company had moved her son Mark’s belongings to South Africa). This image was shot moments after the overly keen young photographer had just tripped over while running backwards. I was kindly scooped up by her security team and allowed to carry on.

The Headington Shark

Just off the High Street in Headington, east of Oxford, is a row of terraced houses, undistinguished apart from the 25ft basking shark, which has plummeted through the roof of number two. The shark first appeared in 1986. Bill Heine, a local radio presenter who still owns the house, has said,“The shark was to express someone feeling totally impotent and ripping a hole in their roof out of a sense of impotence and anger and desperation. It is saying something about CND, nuclear power, Chernobyl and Nagasaki”.
